A rainy afternoon in Cologne: A songwriter with a keen sense for the transgressive and the obscure explores the dark alleys of human existence. As JEWLS, Julia Woll adorns them with black light and ivy tendrils, crafting the music of a man-made world that threatens to suffocate under its own insatiable hunger. The singer–songwriter’s sound draws as much from the cinematic alt-pop of Lana del Rey as from the eclectically produced sampling masterpieces of Caroline Polachek and the baroque glam rock of The Last Dinner Party. However, JEWLS presents a fusion of different stylistic languages that is entirely her own, captivating and thrilling listeners with extraordinary pull even on her debut album, “There Is No Sunset” (2023). For despite the fog and in defiance of all melancholy and darkness, a warmth shines through the guitars and synths that offers comfort like the embrace of a loved one. On her 2025 EP, “We’ve Invented Speed”, and her latest single, “The Crushed” (2026), JEWLS also demonstrates these qualities of her songwriting, which she has refined with great attention to production detail. JEWLS is an artist of exceptional calibre, so self-assured and individualistic – the likes of whom we rarely encounter here in Germany.
