The effect of dopamine is not simply to reward us when something pleasant happens. Rather, it is the anticipation, the hope for the future that fuels the hormone. In VERNIER’s sound, the mechanism of unbridled hope comes into play in much the same way, even when the singer–songwriter’s poignant falsetto in a track such as “Like That” (2025) sounds like heart-wrenching resignation. It works nonetheless. Through the instrumentation, the harmonies, and the surging melodies, there is always a sense of confidence and inner strength resonating here that gives the listener goosebumps after just a few notes. Where does this sense of rhythm, this confidence in the arrangements and production come from? VERNIER has been active for years as a drummer for big names such as Levin Liam, Philine Sonny, and Fil Bo Riva. He has stage experience and – together with producer friends and songwriter Sarah Muldoon – has lovingly and collaboratively crafted the tracks on his recently released debut EP, “Right Place Wrong Time” (2026). It’s the first clear sign of life from an indie artist from whom we are sure to hear much more in the future.
