On many world maps, Africa – the second largest continent on Earth – appears much smaller than it actually is. The reason for this is an old cartographic method that was intended to help sailors navigate in the 16th century. Countries along the equator are depicted to scale, but the farther south or north you go, the less accurate the image becomes. Our perception is distorted – and this is also due to the way Africa is portrayed in the media, where the continent usually only appears in connection with negative news.

However, this continent has so much more to offer! This is the starting point for Stève Hiobi’s non-fiction book: The Grimme Online Award–winning Afrofluencer explains the history of this diverse continent. He shows that the first successful caesarean section was performed in Uganda and analyses why colonialism is far from over. With articles on the infrastructure, culture, and innovations of African countries, he opens up new perspectives that go beyond conflict-focussed journalism.
The question always remains: What does this have to do with us? A fact-filled and entertaining book about a continent that is not only the cradle of humanity, but also its future.
