Music is one of the most powerful tools in cinematic storytelling. It establishes moods and time references, emphasises or counteracts the action on screen, conveys information about the inner lives of characters, and much more. In doing so, it always has a direct and powerful effect on the emotions of the audience. Its use is essentially in the hands of the director, but as in all aspects of filmmaking, there are many people involved who have to agree on artistic, technical, organisational and economic issues.

Music always plays a prominent role in the films of director and screenwriter Jan-Ole Gerster. His debut film OH BOY won six German Film Awards in 2013, including Best Feature Film and Best Film Music (by The Major Minors and Cherilyn MacNeil). In his film LARA, which won the Bavarian Film Award for Best Film Music in 2019, music was also one of the central themes of the narrative. And at this year's German Film Awards, his latest film ISLANDS was again nominated for Best Film and won the award for Best Film Music (by Dascha Dauenhauer). Jan-Ole Gerster takes full advantage of all the possibilities for using music as a narrative tool in film. He will be interviewed by director and writer Sonja Heiss.

The event is presented by Filmfest Hamburg, Creative Europe Desk Hamburg and MOIN Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, who will host a cross-industry networking reception afterwards.
