The ravages of time will not gnaw away at Loving’s sound. That much is certain. The Canadian trio’s carefully arranged indie folk odes on their previous albums sound too sweet, too benevolent and soft. With their debut, ‘If I Am Only My Thoughts’ (2020), Jesse, Lucas, and David may not have reinvented the wheel of flawless summery songwriting that lies somewhere between Paul McCartney, Fleet Foxes, and Mac DeMarco – but they have achieved remarkable mastery. On their follow-up, ‘Any Light’, they achieve this sound with a lightness that is infectious and that can move you to tears, regardless as to whether you are in love, enjoying the sun, or just having a damn good day. Think of José González on vocals or Fleetwood Mac in terms of cosiness. Loving have their sound in their name and combine indie pop with bedroom charm, folk nuances with hypnagogic production tricks, the pastoral with the psychedelic.
